Workshop 2016

Idea Mill of Sensor Enthusiasts at Coburg University

For the eighth time the ISAT hosted the international workshop on "Novel Developments and Applications in Sensor and Actuator Technology", which took place on September 14th and 15th, 2016. International scientists, experts and industrial representatives joined to experience, discuss and evaluate profound theoretical lectures, detailed practical reports and scientific short contributions in the field of sensors and actuators.

Topical highlights of the program were optical waveguide sensors, microacoustic sensors and actuators, microfluidic applications, biomedical applications and industrial applications of sensors. For example, Iain McKenzie from the European Space Agency talked about fiber optical sensors for space applications, Michael Wiertlewski from the French research organization CNRS explained haptic interfaces and Klaus Stefan Drese, the new co-director of ISAT, presented microfluidic systems.

A poster session and a guided tour through the ISAT lab building offered various opportunities for scientific communication. Moreover, there was recent time for networking.

The workshop attracted more than 80 participants from industry and science. 11 invited speakers from 10 different countries hold key lectures. Apart from that, scientists contributed to this year’s program with short contributions on all topics.

The conference took place in the recently reconstructed lecture hall building on the main campus of our university. This venue allowed lively academic exchange and triggered discussions about new cooperations among the participants from universities, research centres, high-tech companies and the AMA Association for Sensor Technology.

Thanks to the German Research Foundation and its support, Coburg was presented again as an attractive location for sensor technology. We are looking forward to the next event in this workshop series in the year 2017.

Workshop 2015

Current and prospective sensor developments

On September 16th and 17th, 2015 international scientists and experts from industry met in Coburg for discussions of latest research results as well as upcoming products and technologies in the exciting field of sensors and actuators at the 7th International Workshop on "Novel Developments and Applications in Sensor and Actuator Technology".

The development and implementation of new sensors and actuators is a central issue for future industrial environments.

Topical highlights of the program were optical and acoustic waveguide sensors, biosensors, acoustofluidic actuators, ultrasound actors and touch devices. In addition, coffee breaks with poster sessions and a guided tour through the ISAT lab building as well as a small exhibition offered various opportunities for scientific communication.

One of the highlights of this year’s conference was the participation of Prof. Dr. Minoru K. Kurosawa from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan whose research focuses on ultrasonic motors.

This annual meeting, which was supported by German Research Foundation, took place for the first time in the recently reconstructed lecture hall building on the main campus of our university. This venue allowed lively academic exchange and triggered discussions about new cooperations among the nearly 80 participants from universities, research centres and the AMA Association for Sensor Technology.

Thanks to the German Research Foundation and its support, Coburg was presented again as an attractive location for sensor technology. We are looking forward to the next event in this workshop series in the year 2016.

Workshop 2014

Sensors on a mission

The development and implementation of new sensors and actuators is a central issue for future industrial environments. During the 6th International Workshop on „Novel Developments and Applications in Sensor and Actuator Technology” leading international scientists and professionals also looked at outer space within the special topic on cryosensors. Representatives of the German Aerospace Center/ Institute of Space Systems, Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, University of Bayreuth and members of the ISAT spoke about cryogenic storage tanks, cryogenic liquids and cryogenic flows.

International well-known speakers such as Prof. Dr. James Friend, who talked about the development from chip in a lab to lab on a chip in acoustic microfluidics, contributed to this event thus promoting interdisciplinary networking and professional discussions. Another example within the wide field of sensing technologies was presented by Eric Schulte Südhoff, M.Sc of RWTH Aachen University with his talk on “Measurement of optical yarn properties by using absorption and diffraction of coherent laser light”.

Moreover, sessions about different sensing technologies, micro acoustic sensor systems and acoustic actuators featured speakers who captivated the audience. In addition, the coffee breaks and guided tours through the ISAT lab building as well as a small exhibition offered various opportunities for scientific communication. Besides his talk, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas König, from Technical University of Kaiserslautern, presented an integrated Lab-on-Spoon system prototype, which attracted the participants. Also SENTARES, a flying drone prototype for wireless monitoring, developed by the Fraunhofer Application Center Wireless Sensor Systems, a close cooperation partner of ISAT, had been displayed and prototype accompanied the lecture on “intelligent sensor data transport and processing”, by Prof. Dr. Wieland, head of the Fraunhofer Application Center Wireless Sensor Systems.

The attainment and positive feedback of the workshop in 2014 and the participation of various international professionals and scientists plead for the continuous success in the years to come.

Workshop 2013

5th International Workshop on "Novel Developments and Applications in Sensor and Actuator Technology"

Leading specialists in Sensor and Actuator Technology as well as other disciplines seized the opportunity to review and discuss their recent research results at Hofbrauhaus Coburg from September 18-20, 2013 at the 5th International Workshop on "Novel Developments and Applications in Sensor and Actuator Technology".

Issues regarding energy efficiency of sensors, phononic crystals, sensor networks, sensor materials as well as microacoustic fluid actuators and laser acoustics became addressed in the keynote lectures and the short contributions. In addition, Dr. Picker´s lecture on "Ultra-cold Neutrons and the Universe" attracted much interest throughout the audience. A mutual exchange of positions regarding the content of the lectures among all participating experts was deliberated during breaks.

For the first time this workshop, organized by the Institute of Sensor and Actuator Technology (ISAT) of Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts, offered all participants a guided tour in the new research facility to learn more about the institute reviewing experimental set-ups, prototypes and a poster exhibition throughout the whole building.
Polytec, one of ISAT´s cooperation partners took the opportunity to present fibre-optic sensors embedded in a hands-on sailing ship exhibit which was discussed and during the guided tours and breaks.

To retain the link between the annual workshop and the Summer School of the international master´s program AIMS (Analytical Instruments, Measurement and Sensor Technology) the third day was again presented at the main campus of Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The introductive lectures of Professor Wieland regarding "Wireless sensor networks" and Professor Funke reflecting on "Research on Alzheimer´s disease with molecular biological methods" as well as the lecture on "NDE of Electrochemical Systems by Microwaves" of Professor Fischerauer particularly addressed new students in the program to give a concise insight into the wide field and diverse areas of sensor technology.

Consecutively representatives of Bombardier Transportation Austria GmbH, Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH& Co. KG and Robert Bosch GmbH gave insights into their companies to give all new students an insight and pointed different job perspectives out.

Co-Chairman Dr. Denise Müller-Friedrich entitled the workshop as "outstanding opportunity to join international leading scientists and business partners and enable connecting factors for the progress of future partnerships and thus: innovations." She emphasized that "This workshop is a benefit for the research and development activities of the institute and annually extends its existing expert-network."
