High-Intensity Ion Source for Coating Substrates with Nanostructures for Organic Electronics

The goal of the SME-Innovative project “ion-booster” is to increase the spray intensity of electrospray deposition by a factor of 100. In addition to the parallelization of spray nozzles, modified geometries and electrical and ultrasonic methods that support atomization are being tested. Simulations are used to determine the optimal field geometries to guide the development process. The most promising approach will ultimately be further developed into a spray prototype. In the future, it is intended to be integrated into the existing, in-house developed deposition system.

ISAT will investigate how physical quantities (electric fields and ultrasound) can optimally influence spray behavior. In particular, the nozzle-nozzle interaction in the electric field will be analyzed based on the simulation. The goal for ISAT is to develop a simulation methodology (FEM-based multiparametric optimization) that allows for efficient optimization in cases where there are many target variables. With regard to ultrasound, the focus is on influencing the droplet formation process, which clearly lies in the sub-wavelength range.
